Practical ways to living a peaceful, intentional life

I love peaceful. Slow living. serenity. Calm. Quietness. But how can one accomplish, walk in this when our home may be filled with endless noise, from crying babies, fits being thrown by toddlers, whining from the preteens, hardships with the teenagers. The blender.  Many times the noises are the squeals of a four year old running through our home screaming in gladness, but it can be too much on a brain. So how can we find rest and peace amidst such a noisy world? Yes, music and the Air Pods help, but even when that just adds to the noise, when it’s just too much, where do we turn to?

We are sitting in the living room, I can see the French doors and the vanity through the doors. I am holding a Joyce Meyer devotional book while the baby is climbing up on the couch to see what I am doing. The floor is covered in toys. Little Willow and Madelyn are playing on the couch across from me.

I sat with my two oldest and meditated on Psalms 23, a familiar passage to most. As we read there were words that jumped out at me, “He makes, He leads, He restores, He prepares, He anoints, He follows me…” We talked about how in this beautiful passage The Lord Himself is doing the actions to us. Sometimes we don’t want to rest, so He makes us lie down, sometimes we don’t want to be led, but when we surrender to His will, He takes us beside still waters that we might be filled.

My two daughters are playing in the water. It has just rained, there is a low spot on our property that collects a lot of water, its like a pond for the tiny girls. There is an arch above with sisters roses on both sides of the Arch.

The truth is, we need restoring. Even if you’ve never gone through anything traumatic in your life, every day living can leave us absolutely drained, in need of refilling. In need. God knows our frame, “He remembers that we are dust”. He is ready and able to lend us a hand, in fact, His Word tells us in 2 Chronicles 16:9: “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him…”

‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭16‬:‭9‬ ‭ESV‬‬

What is required to receive this help? For our hearts to be blameless before Him. How can we know if we are in right standing with God? Jesus. The Sunday school answer, the always correct answer, is Jesus. We can know with confidence that we are in right standing with God if we have accepted Jesus Christ as Our Lord and Savior. He promises to help us. The Lord promises to not only, “never leave us nor forsake us”, but to also use all of the chaos, the pain, the losses, the hardships for our good, for His glory, what are the qualifications? That we love God. That’s it. You may be asking yourself, “But how? How can I love God”. The answer is more simple than you might think, you see 1 John 4:19 tells us we can love God because He first has loved us. I want to remove the pressure! We will be able to love God because He has already loved us! How do we know God loves us? John 3:16 tells us we know God loves us because, “He sent His One and Only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life”!

This is the hope we have. No matter what we are facing, we can have peace and joy because these are eternal gifts we have been given through God. Peace is not something we work towards, but a gift we readily receive from Gods Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22.

There is bread on the counter, a candle is burning in the background.

Can our peace be taken? John 10:10 tells us, “Jesus came to give us life and that more abundantly, but the thief comes to kill, steal and to destroy….” Yes, our peace can be taken, but it can be reclaimed, because it is ours! An inheritance, a promise, sure and steadfast, as an anchor for our souls.

I want you to know my home is rarely free of bickering, in a large household it happens. In small households, it happens. We live in a fallen broken world, with people who act out our worldly, fleshy desires. Many little hands wanting the same toy. Children wanting attention. Unmet expectations, large amounts of school work, a recipe for grumpy, and this is what I often receive, grumbling or complaining, and while I know my children are too being refined in Christ it isn’t always easy to respond with kindness, with mercy or grace. However, the more that we can rest in Gods promises for us, call on Him for help, the more our minds will be filled with His truth and the more our brains will be able to breathe, relax and receive the peace God has given us. Even if our circumstances do not change.

My son and daughter are sitting at the kitchen table, the table has a lovely faux flower bouquet, our wood chandelier is just barely showing and the table is covered in school books.

This is not a secret formula.

But His Word is true and if you’ve chosen to follow Christ you can rest assured He will see you through, in every season, every moment of everyday. Please know, it’s okay if there are tears, it’s okay that everything doesn’t always go our way, it’s okay.

"The pain you've been feeling, can't compare to the joy that's coming.” Romans 8:18 Please read that again.

Life is so very hard sometimes, but it is my hope that as we root and ground ourselves to His Word, His love will more easily flow, and His peace will be the gift we can walk in regardless of how our days are going. Because He is the author and the finisher of our faith, and He will bring this beautiful work to completion, you and I have only been called to faithfulness. And even when we can’t or are not, He will remain faithful because He cannot deny Himself. Beloved, we are in good hands.

Thank you for reading. Many blessings and love on your faith journey! He is Faithful.

It is my sincerest prayer we would find peace and comfort in His Word and joy that cannot be measured. In Jesus Name, Amen.
